Monchique is situated to the north of Portimão and shares borders with Aljezur in the west, Lagos in the south-west, Portimão in the south and Silves in the east. Monchique is 85kms west of Faro airport.
General information - Monchique is the mountain region of the Algarve and is well visited by tourists and residents alike. During the summer and on a clear day, you can see down to the coast with 180 degree views to the east and west. Monchique is one of Portugal’s main health resorts and is situated amongst lush forests of Eucalyptus and Pine trees along with Cork trees which are still cultivated for wine bottles today. The highest point at Foia reaches 2963ft above sea level. The area contains natural springs, and also has one of the most remote health and fitness spas located in Caldas de Monchique. Chief products still include wheat, millet, rye, beans, oranges, wine, olive oil, chestnuts and the potent drink Medronho, a local brew made from distilled Medronho berries picked from the Arbutus or Strawberry tree. The total land area is 395.3 km².
