General information - Silves is an area of historic interest. The city many years ago served as the capital of the Algarve. Silves castle which has undergone massive excavation in recent years is one of the oldest standing castles in Portugal, with the walls towering over the area. Surrounded by countryside and forests containing Eucalyptus and Pine trees the area is also and area of natural beauty. The total land area is 153.4km². Silves is made up of eight parishes.
