Faro is the provincial capital of the Algarve. When Faro island or Praia da Faro as it is commonly known is taken into account, Faro is the most southerly point in Portugal. Faro is bordered by Loulé in the west, Olhão in the east and São Bras de Alportel in the north.
General information
Faro is located next to the Ria Formosa lagoon, a nature reserve with over 170 square kilometers and a stopping place for hundreds of different species of birds during the spring and autumn migratory periods. Praia da Faro or Faro island is approximately 7kms from the city and can only be accessed by driving past the airport. A short hop over a bridge, and you are on Faro island with access to the beach.
Facilities
The city has a university, the International airport that serves the Algarve, as seaport, a marina, and other amenities such as a good bus service and railway network. Faro shares with the Loulé concelho, a 30,000 seater stadium situated just off the motorway. This was one if the first venues used in Euro2004.
